Deck, fence and log home staining in Yakima, WA

We strip tired stain, prep the wood and apply fresh stain, from a deck bench to a whole log home, so the grain reads warm and stays protected.

Chapter 01

Why stained wood turns grey

Stain does its job by soaking into the wood, which is why it fades and wears instead of peeling like a thick coat of paint. Sun bleaches the color, water darkens and roughens the grain, and the wood slowly goes silver-grey. Horizontal surfaces take the worst of it, because a deck or bench holds water and takes every footstep.

That is why the numbers differ. Quality stain usually lasts 3-5 years on a deck and 5-7 years on vertical surfaces like fences and siding. When water stops beading and starts soaking in, or bare patches show through, the wood is asking for its next coat.

How we strip, prep and re-stain

A good stain job is decided before the stain opens. We strip the old stain that has failed, then prep the surface so fresh stain can reach clean, open wood. That one step is the difference between color that evens out and color that blotches.

Our own photos show the method at full size. Two of our best are log homes: an A-frame with a wall of windows and its logs freshly stained golden, caught with the windows still masked in plastic and a boom lift on site, and a two-storey log-sided home with one of our painters on a ladder at the edge of the frame. Masking the glass first is part of the job.

Every project starts with a free estimate, so you get a detailed quote after we have looked at the wood itself. We are family-owned, and licensed with Washington L&I (CASTICP808NG), bonded and insured.

Chapter 03

Keeping the color, and knowing when to refresh

Treat the stain like a schedule, not an emergency. Put a reminder in your calendar for roughly three years on the deck and five on the fence, and look at the wood each spring. A surface refreshed on time takes less prep than one left to go bare.

If an old coat has gone patchy, that is not the end of the wood. We can strip it, prep it and start over. Doors that have taken heavy sun and weather can come back too, and our door staining page covers that, and the gallery shows more of the finished houses.

Staining questions

Not sure whether your wood wants stain or paint? Call (509) 910-1408 and ask, or see our exterior painting page.

Staining penetrates the wood to enhance its natural grain and color, while paint covers the surface completely. Stain keeps the wood looking like wood, and paint gives you a solid color and a different kind of protection.

Depending on the surface and exposure, quality stain can last 3-5 years on horizontal surfaces like decks and 5-7 years on vertical surfaces like fences and siding.

Yes. We can strip old stain, prep the surface, and apply fresh stain, which is how we bring weathered decks, fences and log siding back to life.
